SOLEC 2011 Special Guest Speaker
October 26th, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.

Bryan Pijanowski is currently Professor in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University.  Over the last 20 years, he has published over 75 peer-reviewed papers on the topic of land use, climate change and water quality.  He combines spatial analysis and forecast modeling to examine environmental and economic impacts of what if scenarios related to land use planning and natural resource management.  A major focus of his work also entails the development of online decision support tools that provide various users with access to land use forecasts, environmental quality indicators and accessory information related to the use of this information for decision making.  His work has focused mostly in the Great Lakes basin, but work has also taken him to East Africa, central and eastern Europe, the Middle East and central America.  His special presentation at SOLEC 2011 will focus on work designed to provide stakeholders across the Great Lakes basin with easy access to effective indicators of agriculture and land use.  A demonstration of an online decision support system that integrates non-point source pollution, stream biota, and biological contaminant “tipping points” and indicators across the US side of the Great Lakes will be provided.  GIS maps, dash boards and what-if tools are the hallmarks of this online decision support system.
